Vuescan supported scanners1/2/2023 With VueScan, things are a little different. Much of the software you buy, you purchase the right to use a specific version of that software. The scanner support for VueScan has grown considerably since then. When he modified VueSmart to support other scanners, he renamed the application to VueScan. Ed originally create a program called VueSmart when he wanted to create an application that could do a better job than the one that came with his scanner. It was created in 1998 by Hamrick Software, which was founded by Ed Hamrick. It has all the options that I was looking for: 48-bits of colour (even 64-bit with the infrared channel), large scanner support, great control over the colours, and the ability to save in multiple file types, including TIFF and DNG. It supports over a thousand scanners, so chances are you will be able to use it with your scanner. VueScan is an application that is used to scan in various types of media, including photos and negatives. There are several tools on the market, but the one I chose to use was VueScan. As I said previously it may be possible to scan a larger document in two parts and photomerge. When I decided to archive the old photos and negatives, I wanted to use a program that provided the most flexability with regards to scanning the images. They too are very solid hefty machines and there's plenty on the internet on how to get the most from them, just don't believe the quoted resolution for 35mm. If you want to buy new or nearly-new then perhaps consider the Epson V700, 750, 800, 850 range rather than the V600. Older scanners probably don't have drivers for current operating systems but I use Vuescan: It's firewire but I don't have a problem with that - it's A4 though, but sharp. For what it's worth I use a Umax Powerlook 1120 scanner, very good quality, has a built-in transparency hood and is very sturdy unlike the flimsy offerings that you get these days. I don't have an A3 scanner and occasionally in the past I've wished that I'd had one but they take up a lot of room and compared to the camera they are very slow. Yes, it's good to have a decent scanner in the toolbox though I must say that I'm using the camera far more often these days and the flatbed scanners are (literally) gathering dust.
